SABROSA @ BARSOMA - Featuring Dj RAVI (SunnySideUp/Cutucada)

Tropical Dancefloor sounds from the Sabrosa Sound System, needle to groove friction plus live percussion and analog sound system effects.

Featuring special guest Selector DJ Ravi (SunnySide Up/Cutucada)

Having arguably the deepest record collection this side of the Pacific and co founder of the infamous SunnySide Up session, one of Australia’s first Acid and World Jazz club nights.

Ravi’s a veteran selector, DJ and tastemaker in Brisbane and also Australia. Known for his (and Dj partner Will’s) legendary ‘Sunny Side Up’ nights (80’s-mid 90’s) credited with being one of the first ‘club’ nights in Brisbane/Fortitude Valley and known around Australia (and overseas) as an important night for progressive black music of all genres. The night hosted some of the biggest names on the circuit including Gilles Peterson, Norman Jay, James Lavelle, Del tha Funkee Homosapien plus Australian tastemakers Ennio Styles and Kano. He was also regular DJ at the world jazz dance ‘Cutucada’ sessions alongside Julien Love and Paprika during the mid 2000s, hosting guests such as Karsten John and Chikashi Nishiwaki.

He got his education on the sweaty dancefloors of the original Dingwalls Sessions in Camden market whilst living in London in the early 80s, where Gilles Peterson and Patrick Forge were amongst the first Djs to spin latin jazz, funk, afrobeats and bebop for dancing in a night club environment. As with most sessions involving this music, the crowd tended to be 90% black african, and this experience and ‘schooling’ helped spark his love and passion for the ‘good groove’.

Ravi digs deep, and he boasts one of the most extensive and reputable collections (or should we say libraries), making regular visits to Japan to play and acquire new rarities. Ravi’s spun at Festivals Such as Woodford, Vibes on a Summers Day, and played alongside the likes of UFO, Gilles Peterson, Norman Jay, Dj Shadow, Jazzanova, Keb Darge, Quantic Soul Orchestra, De La Soul, Kruder and Dormeister, LTJ Bukem, Jazztronik, including a memorable opening set for Ethiopian legend Mulatu Astatke on one of his first visits to Australia!

A true Australian and Worldwide rare groove legend!

Happy Jazz mix for Sabrosa

For those of you who know the Happy Jazz radio show, you will be familiar with Adrian Leach and his dedication to the world of Jazz and it’s various forms. The London based dj has shown and shared almost a lifetime of tasteful music from near and far and for some has been an institution for Jazz music globally as a place to tune the ears to the sound, not to mention he is a total gentleman too.

Without further a due we give you Adrian’s mix of Cosmic Jazz funk from the Latin American regions of Argentina, Chile, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Mexico, Venezuela and more, even some candombe rhythms from Uruguay for seasoning. An area lesser explored but very fruitful indeed so just click play and see where it takes you.

BALANÇAFRO Mix by EDSON CARVALHO

First time on Sabrosa we have a guest mix and from the one and only, Edson Carvalho in São Paulo, a true purveyor of rare Brazilian sounds and a master in finding those hard to get hold of records in the heart of São Paulo. If you’re ever in São Paulo look him up, super nice guy and knows what he is on about.

Edson:
Here’s a small selection of Sambas, Macumbas, Batuques and other swinging songs heavily inspired in the African Brazilian religions CandomblÈ and Umbanda.
AfroSambas, as we call this type of music, have a huge presence in the Brazilian music, because both CandomblÈ and Umbanda hold an important place in our culture. They are like futebol; even if we try to ignore them they will be part, in one way or another, of our day to day life. All these songs came from compactos (7” singles). It was hard to select them from the 60 or so songs I have in this format. If I had included LPs, the number of songs would be, at least, the triple, and probably I’d get lost in the selection process.
Again, I tried to avoid the known songs and selected the more obscure ones. My intention was to bring these lost gems to the light of the day and give them some shine.

I really hope you enjoy this compilation.

Like always, all the comments are welcome and appreciated.

Greetings from Brazil!

Edson Carvalho

Los Diablos Del Ritmo Mix by PepeSol for Parisdjs.com

With the eminent Analog Africa release “Los Diablos Del Ritmo”about to hit the known world, anticipation is high and understandably so. A 5 year project in the making of avid vinyl detective and Dj, Samy Ben Redjeb, contains the very ingredients of the infamous melting pot of the Colombian Northern Coastline. Señor Redjeb’s taste for psychedelic and hypnotic rhythms are no doubt aurally present in this deep retrospective. So in celebration Señor PepeSol has a mix that walks the sandy backstreets of La Costa out of the boxes of the Colombian sound systems and direct to your place of listening….enjoy at Parisdjs.com
